Korea Stock Exchange


Korea Exchange (KRX) was created through the integration of the three existing Korean spot & futures exchanges (Korea Stock Exchange, Korea Futures Exchange and KOSDAQ) under the Korea Stock & Futures Exchange Act.The securities and futures markets of former exchanges are now operated as the business divisions of the KRX: the Stock Market Division (KSE), KOSDAQ Market Division and Futures Market Division. At the end of 2005, it was ranked 15th in terms of market capitalization and 9th in terms of trading value among the member exchanges of the World Exchange Federation.

The exchange has normal trading sessions from 09:00am to 03:00pm on all days of the week except Saturdays, Sundays and holidays declared by the Exchange in advance.

Korea Exchange Chronology / Timeline:
1956 - The Korea Stock Exchange (KSE) established
1971 - Margin trading system introduced at the KSE
1973 - The book-entry clearing system introduced at the KSE
1975 - Continuous trading system replaced call trading system at the KSE
1983 - The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) launched (100 shares)
1984 - Korea Fund listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)
1985 - Samsung Electronic Co. became the first Korea company to issue overseas CBs
1992 - Direct portfolio investment by foreign investors allowed
1997 - On-line trading introduced at the KSE
1998 - Daily price change limit expanded from 8% to 12%
1999 - The Korea Futures Exchange (KOFEX) launched and also listed the first mutual fund.
2000 - The KSE eliminated the lunchtime breaks
2002 - After-hour session expanded(15:10~15:40 15:10~16:00). The KSE launched Exchange Traded Fund(ETFs) market
2003 - The KSE opened the pre-hours trading session(07:30~08:30)
2007 - First foreign company listed
